iCivics.org is an excellent website for social studies teachers. It offers many resources to support civics education, including games and lesson plans covering such topics as the Constitution, civil rights, and immigration.
The games themselves are engaging, fun, and could easily be incorporated into lesson planning to support learning. Many of them place students in scenarios that require them to apply concepts they are learning in their classrooms as they take on the role of lawyers, politicians running for office, or even diplomats trying to solve an international crisis.
As for the lesson plans, they includes useful teaching guides and learning materials for students such as powerpoint presentations, visuals, readings, and worksheets. As an additional feature, teachers can easily look up their state’s standards that apply to the website’s lesson plans. Additionally, teachers can manage all these games and activities from their own account, where they can create classes, invite students, and track their progress.
Finally, students can see that the work they complete online can make a positive impact. As students play games, they accumulate points which they can use to vote on charitable projects they like. Every three months, iCivics.org donates $1000 to the top voted charity.
All of us educators can use help with keeping children engaged with the topic. Although this is not my topic, it seem like a great way to help teacher's . I also like the fact that the site donates money to charity not just charge for their services.
