Formative
Wouldn't it be nice if teachers could monitor all of their student's work at the same time and intervene when necessary? We know the ratio of teacher to students is significantly different, but as teachers we have learned different ways of managing a classroom to meet the needs of all the students. One way that teachers have begun to monitor their students' progress is through the use of technology. A particular website the works well is called Formative.
Formative is a free online source that allows teachers or educators the ability to watch their students work in real time. This website allows them to create homework, class work and even assessments to the particular subject they're teaching. In each thing they create they have the option of adding multiple choice, a typed response or "showing their work" button for the students to respond to. Once the task has been created you provide your students with either the access code or a shareable link. As the students are working you can display a view of everyone in real time which means that you can instantly give feedback or assistance as you see fit. It also allows you to grade it on the spot and export it to wherever you desire. This website reduces the time that it takes to reach each individual student and gives them a grade instantly.

Newsela
As a future English teacher, I am always looking for websites that provide reputable articles on current events in a way that is easy for high-school age students to understand. Newsela provides students and teachers alike access to thousands of articles ranging in topics from art, science, politics, and hot topics. This website provides useful features for teachers looking to differentiate their lesson based on the differing reading levels of their students with its option to change the lexile range of the reading content within each article, which changes the wording to a level that would be best fit for each reader. This website also comes equipped with pre-made sets of articles based on main ideas or themes that could easily be translated into a lesson, such as discussions on a novel about space travel supplemented with articles on advancements in aerospace engineering or technologies that will further space exploration. This website is very user-friendly and allows teachers the option to create their own text-sets to be accessed by their students with a simple code. When designing a class assignment, if logged in as a teacher, users even have access to which students have viewed the assigned articles, the ability to assign writing exercises, and even an option to design quizzes. This website makes implementing technology in the classroom so simple it seems like a no-brainer!
Peergrade
Cooperative learning is a method of teaching that allows students the ability to build relationships and create new experiences by working with others in their classroom. It prepares students for the future workplace where they need to be able to work with a variety of different people with a range of skills, talents, and strengths. One that is fairly recent and works very effectively for both students and teachers is Peergrade.
Peergrade is a free online resource that grants students the ability to "peer grade" or review their classmates' work. How this works is that the teacher creates a specific assignment with a designated rubric that they can either create from their website or attached from their files. From there the students turn in their assignment, receives feedback from other students, and the teacher gets complete overview of the student's work and feedback. With this, students are able to begin to gain a sense of how to properly give constructive criticism using the rubric. Sometimes people are more willing to take criticism from there peers than others. This website would work really good for classes where students have to write something or one where they have a project that involves different components.

Google Arts & Culture
Google Arts & Culture is an excellent resource for extending learning beyond the classroom. Using a variety of Google technologies, users can explore art and culture through works of art, museums, and reading about art news and art movements.
Students can get up close and personal with historical artifacts by exploring them with 3D generated models, use Google street view to take virtual tours of museums all over the world, and use Google Maps to find local museums, sites, and exhibits, which could serve as a starting point for family trips or field trips. Students can also curate their own online galleries, by selecting artifacts and works of art that appeal to them personally or fit into some predetermined theme or question.
While this app does not supply teachers with lesson plans, there are countless ways Google Arts & Culture can be integrated into the classroom experience. Whether they are taking virtual tours, closely examining individual art pieces, or researching art movements, this app opens up the whole world of culture and human creativity to students.
In history classes, for example, students could explore St. Paul’s Cathedral and study the religious history imbedded in its iconography and its sculptures. In science classes, students could take a virtual field trip to the Carlsbad Caverns and study bats. Art students could curate galleries that showcase different art movements or styles. This is an amazing resource with endless applications.
Flipquiz.com
Flipquiz.com is a free, game show-style review activity for students. Teachers create Jeopardy style boards with questions grouped into categories and assigned point values. To enhance questions, teachers can attach images or videos.
Using Flipquiz would certainly be more engaging and fun for students than traditional review activities like study guides or in-class review sessions. The points system and competitive aspect of the website could transform test review into a lively and fun game.
Additionally, teachers can upgrade to the pro-version at the cost of seven dollars a month. This comes with additional features. Teachers can create classes to invite students and keep score on the website rather than in the classroom. Moreover, students can have access to flash cards based on the review boards, allowing for additional study at home.
Overall this seems like a great way to turn test review into something more fun and engaging than traditional study guides. By playing the game, teachers can also get an immediate sense of what students are strong in and what they need to work on more.
StoryBird for Educators
For teachers that want to provide their students with creative outlets, one excellent website is StoryBird for Educators. Using pre-made illustrations, the site claims to inspire students to write better and read often. Students can create picture books, chapter books, or illustrated poetry.
Students start by selecting the images they like and building a story around them. There are thousands to choose from--such as diverse characters and great scenes and backdrops. This is a great exercise to get students to make connections between images and the text they create. Additionally, the site provides many guides that help students learn about the mechanics of good storytelling--like figurative language, points of view, and developing characters.
Teachers can also create accounts where they can manage student work, give assignments, and track progress. And, it is completely safe to use. Students are not required to provide emails, the site does not allow students to enter last names or personal information, and students can only read the stories of their classmates and only collaborate and communicate with their classmates.
Also, although the site saves student-created works, users can purchase PDF downloads of their books or buy actual printed copies, which they can share with friends and family.
This would be an excellent resource in any elementary or middle school language arts classroom. It encourages student creativity and allows them to practice their writing skills. By choosing images and themes that they like and writing the stories that they are inspired to write, students might be more motivated to put in more effort when writing.
Howcast
Howcast is website that features a vast array of how-to-videos. The videos range from topics such parenting, pets, exercise, business, language learning, cooking, science, and so much more!
I personally love Howcast. There was a point in my life when I was really interested in getting different pets, like a rabbit and cat. I found a ton of videos on how to take care of rabbits and cats. Howcast provides videos that are concise and direct to the point. I really appreciate how they are really interactive. Many times a person is actually physically showing you how to do something!
For example, say students in middle school wanted ideas for science projects or how to better understand certain concepts. On Howcast, there is a section labeled Science Basics. On this page, students and teachers will find videos on "How to Understand Atoms, How to Make Ionic Compounds, How to Make a Model of the Human Body," etc. I really recommend this website, because it provides so much easily accessible information and really helps to enhance student learning.

ZipGrade
ZipGrade is an app which allows teachers to easily and quickly grade multiple choice questions simply by taking a picture of it with an iPhone or iPad. This turns the phone or tablet into an optical imaging machine just like scantron. Students get instant feedback on their exit tickets and quizzes as soon they finish it. It can grade 20 test a minute, and the number of questions on the answer sheets can be 20, 50 or 100. These answer sheets are free to download.
It is very easy to use. All you need to do is to create quiz in a separate document and then attach an answer sheet to it. Students mark their answers on it. To grade, you hold your phone over the answer sheet. ZipGrade will capture the image, and phone will vibrate when you will do so.
Creating test and quizzes on the app is super easy. You can do it either by scanning your answer key or simply by toggling the correct answers on the screen. You have an option of creating quiz with 100 questions and the active questions can be anywhere on the answer sheet. ZipGrade does not only work with the multiple-choice questions but also with partial credit or alternative versions with answer keys. Even extra credit questions can be added. The students score will be based on what he got on the primary answer sheet and any extra point will be counted as extra credit. Also, you do not have to be connected to internet while using it. You can be offline, and still will be able to use it to scan, grade and review the assessments. In short, the students love the instant feedback, and the teachers love the ease of grading.

Kurzgesagt
Today I have a wonderful gift to share with you. That gift is Kurzgesagt. You're welcome.
Have you ever gone down one of those internet rabbit holes where you jump from link to link to learn about a topic? It often happens on pages like Wikipedia, and you almost always end up at a place you never thought you would. Start with looking at a page about wolves and end up learning how stars are born. It is a fantastic way to waste time that I partake in frequently. A similar process can take place on Youtube, where you finish one video and see what suggestions are there to watch next. Two hours later and you've watched some stuff you never would have normally. You've also actually learned a few things.
Kurzgesagt is the Youtube rabbit hole operating at maximum potential. They have videos focused on explaining scientific, economic, and philosophic concepts, as well as the questions these concepts beget. In order to fully explain a concept or answer a hypothetical question, Kurzgesagt must effectively teach you about the concept. This usually involves teaching you concepts that are related to the concept in question, which is the rabbit hole staple. The teaching style employed in these videos is so well-executed that I'm convinced elementary students could understand highly complex ideas. Kurzgesagt explains concepts in simple terms using aesthically pleasing images to drive the point home. A comforting atmosphere is curated by the soft tone of voice from the narrator and the minimalistically beautiful illustrations. This is important, as many of the concepts covered lead to dark and dreadful thoughts.
What kind of concepts are covered? Wormholes. Universal Basic Income. Optimistic Nihilism. The Fermi Paradox (which is why we haven't met any aliens even though they most likely exist). And all of these videos will play one right after the other. Think of all the astronomically complex things you will have learned from a night of Kurzgesagt Youtube watching versus normal Youtube watching. You'd understand how extraterrestrial colonization works instead of how many hot wings Snoop can eat in one sitting. You're welcome.
The connections for education are clear. I can learn from Kurzgesagt how to be a more effective teacher. My students can use Kurzgesagt as an extended learning resource. I definitely want to make a video in this vain at some point, and maybe I'll make my students do the same. I hope you will utilize these connections as well, but if not, I hope you just watch some of the videos and then talk to me about them. Please.
CodinGame
When looking to improve logic skills, the more practice that is available, the better. Sometimes developing activities that are both challenging and engaging can be a very difficult task for a software development teacher. That is where CodinGame excels. CodinGame is an online based platform that consists of hundreds of gamified programming challenges that work to improve specific aspects of the software development process. The mini-games are set up in a way that will continue to increase the complexity of the puzzles that need to be solved using programming skills across dozens of different languages. Since it is in the form of a game, participants will get a score after each level. This is a great incentive to put maximum effort and engagement into what they are working on. While not an educational platform, this tool can be an excellent source of continued practice for out of classroom time, or can be used to reinforce concepts during an in-class activity. I have used CodinGame to keep my skills sharp, and I can speak directly to how effective and exciting it can be to work through the puzzles. Whether you’re teaching algorithms or looking to give coding a try, CodinGame is a great place to hone your skills!
Quizalize
Quizalize is a website designed to allow teachers to create quiz based games with a focus on differentiation across all subject matters.
Teachers have access to a large quantity of pre-made quizzes from a wide variety of subject matters, such as: The American Revolution, The Environment, and Many More.
Teachers also have the ability to create their own quizzes from scratch and include things such as: audio and images of their choosing.
Once a Quiz is created, its availability can be set and changed, assigned as homework, or done in the classroom. Every Quiz has a code that, when entered, gives students access to the test. Once they begin, students complete each question at their own pace, meaning one student can easily be 5 questions ahead of another without needing to wait for the entire class.
After the Quiz is completed the site scores student performance, and groups students into Strong, Almost There, and Needs Help based on scores. This is where the sites prized differentiation comes in, as teachers can see which students got which questions incorrect, and what skills they need to improve.
It would be impossible to find any service that is perfect, and Quizalize does have some issues. My main concern while using this tool was its unintuitive design, as the site can be very difficult to navigate. It took me quite a while before I could even figure out how to load saved Quizzes, or figure out how to properly use some of the tools. Though tutorials are provided there is some complexity in some of the more advanced resources the site provides.
Additionally, the site will only remember last 5 games with a free account, so if you end up using this tool often, be sure to record the results quickly.

Smithsonian Learning Lab
Smithsonian Learning Lab
The
Smithsonian Learning lab is an excellent classroom resource. It is interactive
and meaningful. It’s filled with pictures videos and reliable content that is
safe for kids. It’s great for kids because when you search for a topic the
results are pictures not lists which helps children to quickly identify what it
is they are looking for or what is most interesting to them. There are over a
million artifacts in the Smithsonian Learning lab for children to explore. I
love this resource because you can create and share all within the website as
well. You can create lessons for the children to go in and research and
complete. The filter feature in great in really getting you what you are looking
for. You can search through the archives and find resources that are currently
on display in ,museums, this I like because it’s like visiting a museum all
while sitting in your classroom. Resources are not always available to go to a museum;
however this is a great resource to spark curiosity and interests in children. Using
the resources in the learning lab children can create their own projects and
collections of the resources they find as well.
Epic!
Epic!
Epic
is an online book site. I first heard about Epic from my daughter’s teacher. They
started using Epic in the classroom as a classroom resource; it is free for
teachers and classrooms to use. She had an account that she would use at school
and when she tried to login at home she could not. So we bought a subscription
for the family to use, once I saw the website I thought it was great. We
purchased a monthly membership for $5.99 a month; we have 5 different book
accounts kind of like Netflix. When your child reads you can see what they are
reading how long they are reading and they have medals/levels the kids can earn
through reading which a great incentive is for the children. I like epic most
because of all of the amazing books it has, there are books for all ages, and it’s
free for teachers and librarians. This is such a great classroom resource
imagine all of the books that you won't have to purchase. In addition to that
it is another way to bring a technological resource into the classroom.

Accelerated Reader
Accelerated Reader is an assessment that is designed to assign reading
levels, provide reports, and alert teachers to students who are having difficulties. It is a website where students can choose books to read online, at their own reading level. This is a great resource because it is personalized to each student. I have had personal experience with this website, and I think this is a good resource to keep children reading on a daily basis. This is a technology resource, which incorporates technology with reading. Instead of reading actual books, the students read the books online, take a quiz, and the information given afterwards helps the teacher understand where each child is reading wise. Students are able to track their reading level throughout the year, which helps motivate them to keep reading and get to a higher level! After reading each book, AR gives out a quiz on that certain book to see how well the child understood. If the comprehension is not there, the child does not pass that level, and will have to complete more books at that reading level until they are able to comprehend what they are reading. I do not think that this resource should totally take the place of real books, but I do think it is a great resource for teachers, and students as well, because it keeps track of each students personal reading level.

Wix
I really like this resource Wix. Wix is a online resource where websites are made. Either you can make the website on your own, or you can have Wix make the website that you want. I know that websites can take a long time to make. Even the person in my class that presented this resource in class said that it took him two hours to make a website that was good. But this resource does the trick. It is very easy and simple to use. I think that Wix can help a lot of people with building websites faster and simpler that before. It can take a few hours instead of days or maybe even weeks to build a pretty good website. All it asks for are simple questions and not all of the questions need to be answered. It allows the builder of the site to create the website that he or she wants effectively. Websites are not suppose to be a headache, and Wix does a great job at not making websites headaches. Wix is an awesome resource to use for any type of websites. People need a better way of making websites because that is where tons of people go to find out about places, buy or sell, research, etc. and Wix is awesome in making websites easier to do that.
