The Common Core Controversy

The common core, especially regarding new ways of teaching math, has received a lot of flack recently from parents who find the new systems confusing and unnecessary. It's been spread all over on Facebook, to the point where my coworkers talk about it as if they were disgruntled parents. I personally think the system is confusing as well, however, I understand that that is merely one aspect of the common core. I actually appreciate what the common core tries to do, in creating a nationwide standard for kids in math and language arts. Every child is entitled to the same quality education no matter the state they live in.

One thing I think is pretty neat is that many educational websites offer resources to help keep lesson plans on course with standards. I imagine it’s very handy for these teachers who may utilizing those websites. Even websites that create their own lessons, or make games to help reinforce lessons use the standards, contributing to the universal standard of education.

People on Facebook can argue back and forth about whether the way 3rd graders are taught math is effective or not, but ultimately it won’t be going away unless it is proven to be ineffective after some time. I applaud educational resources for adhering to the standards, as it helps to truly be as efficient as they say.
