The Mardigan Library Online Database

Hi guys, I'll be talking about our libraries online database

I use this Database a lot due to taking courses that usually involve some form of research. I think our database is laid out very well and is better than things like Google Scholar, ProQuest, etc. What I really like about our database is our wealth of sources as well as the Definitions and Search Terms on the side. Although I'm pretty close to graduating when I was transitioning from Community College to a University Envrieomtnt seeing suggested terms helped me get rolling when I had never done a lot of research. The Login is very easy as well it's just your Umich Name/Password as the need for a library PIN was removed. You also have the ability to save items you find onto a list, this won't be saved between logins but you can send a list of what is found to yourself to keep for future reference, although I have had issues getting the links on the sources to work they also have the ISBN number, title, author, etc. and make finding the source again easy as there are tons of identifying information. We also have a very good search engine/ source refiner

Firstly the ability to refine your search to whatever is available online is fantastic, especially now, although many of these are not Mardigan Library sources. Aside from that most of these are quality of life terms, although I had to minimize them Content-Type, Author, Discipline, Subject Terms, Language all of these are great ways to refine a search as well as the Date of Publication bar being excellent for those projects which require recent sources. The ability to find scholarly history articles in English is something that has saved me tons of time. This year I did a project on the Bolshevik Revolution and just the ability to make sure that the catalog only brought up things in English saved me 20 minutes of scouring for items that I could actually read, much less those that are on the topic I want to research. There's also the fact that there is a preview option on most sources, which usually lets you see the abstract for a particular source without navigating away from the Mardigan Site. Although some people could find annoyance with every item you click opening a new tab on your browsers I really like this as I don't need to wait for the Libraries Site to keep refreshing every time I navigate away.
