Kahoot!

Bring some excitement and competition to review sessions with Kahoot!

https://getkahoot.com

Kahoot is a free website that allows teachers to create fun and interactive games (made up of multiple choice questions) that students play together as a class. Students use their own devices (smartphones, tablets, etc) to go to kahoot.it and enter the game pin for the game the teacher has created. There is no log-in required, its one click game play! The game should be displayed on the main screen in front of the class, and students can watch as they and their classmates join and create one-time usernames.  Once everyone in class has joined the game, the teacher starts the game and the first question appears on the main screen. Students race to answer the question correctly, competing head to head against all their classmates. The game keeps score for each student and displays the leaderboard after each question. Students love this game, and really get into it!

Powerpoint

Powerpoint

Regardless of the topic, a powerpoint presentation can help you communicate an idea to an audience. Its simple to use and effective in a classroom setting. You can use it for all different ages, classes and subjects. Teachers can use it to lecture. They can add graphics as well as lots of information and links to sites. It organizes chapters as well as teachers thoughts and ideas. Its a great technology because it can be accessed through computers, smartphones, and tablets. Powerpoint is great for students as well because it can be used as a form of notes and presentation. This makes their thought clear and organized. This is also a great technology for students because it prepares them for the real world where most will have to present for a college class or business meeting and things of that sort.

Code.com

The STEM resource that I decided to blog about is called "code.com". It's an online resource dedicated to engaging underrepresented minorities in learning computer science. It has resources for students, teachers and anyone who wants to continue their knowledge in the computer sciences. For students in particular, they can either take free online courses or meet-up with local students in the area to take classes. In the Detroit area alone there was nine available meetings. For students that wanted a more online approach there were many resources available through the Internet as well.
Being an aspiring secondary education teacher, I looked for high school and middle school teaching possibilities. As far as implementing this resource in the classroom, there are 2 years (2 semesters) available for teachers to include in their curriculum as they please. The first semester's curriculum is called, "Computer Science Discoveries" which is intended for 7th to 9th graders and is designed as a beginner's course in code.  They have a bunch of interactive videos and lesson plans laid out on a week-to-week basis. Also, they have a lot of professional development opportunities for teachers to become more familiar with code in order to be able to make the coding material being taught more relevant and approachable for students. They also offer a second semester course intended for advanced placement and older  high school students called, "Computer Science Principals", which has a similar layout with lesson plans, professional development resources, etc...

TeacherKit takes classroom management to another level. Teachers can download this app on their smartphone or right to their laptop. TeacherKit can be used from grades K-12 and even at a college level. You can keep track of students' attendance, add behavior notes, record grades, create student level reporting. You can also manage as many classes you need and keep them organized in the app, and can import/export data safely using Dropbox. The best part about this app is that it is FREE! It doesn't cost you anything to download onto your computer or phone.
